DETROIT, MI (RWN) - The Detroit Red Wings solidified a key part of their blue line Friday by signing four-time Norris Trophy winning defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom to a two-year deal, avoiding the prospect of losing him to unrestricted free agency.
The new deal will pay Lidstrom just over $7 million per season, equalling his pay from last year.
While Lidstrom is now inked at less than expected, it may not be enough to keep Brendan Shanahan in town.
NHL free agency opens up Saturday at noon.
